This past Saturday the Loyalist club welcomed their new members and partners from Cricket NB as they put on the 2nd annual Snow Cricket tourney. Loyalist Dunu Eliaba did  most of the organizing for this great tournament  This tourney saw 10 teams total take part and the Loyalist Rugby Club was well represented with 3 teams, Very Fine Leg and captain Dan Kowalski, Wicket Good captained by Matt Grant and Deep,Long skippered by Alex Labelle.
The day started out at Meghan Macafee's house as Barry Morrison and Malcolm Macafee cooked a 3 pig breakfast for all the would be cricketeers.  The action and good times came fast and often as all three teams played their hearts out while smiling the entire time. A great East Indian lunch was provided for all players which was absolutely delicious.

To the much surprise of everyone and most of all to  the team Very Fine Leg, they would go undefeated until the championship game where they would fall to the all cricketeer team of the Cricket Mafia.  They would however take home some hardware for 2nd place and bragging rights until next year.  Thanks to Cricket NB, Dunu Eliaba and everyone involved for putting on this event....good times had by all.

On Jan 26th, the second annual Loyalist Milk Jug Curling Tournament occurred. Three sheets of homemade ice would be the playing surface along with countless amounts of milk jugs filled with water and food dye. The throwing was fierce along with the competition. Shots were made, take outs happened but glory could only be had by one team on the day.  This went to the team of Blake Edwards and Alex Caines, coincidentally the ones who primarily made the rinks along with help from Matt Grant, Dan Kowalski, Graeme Hovey.
Second place went to the team of Steve Smith and Andy Nyenhuis who recieved their 1.99 bowl trophy from Village Village.  Parents to be, Jessica Miller and Aaron Pugh won 3rd place and a .99 cent gold, plastic plate. Next up, we will be converting the three sheets of ice to the shiny hockey rink/tourney.  Stay tuned!

On Jan 1st, New Year's Day, members of the club numbering in the 50s came to the club for the annual chili cook-off and snow bowl. Club members braved the cold wind and 6 ft snow which saw many players being lost on the field and a search and rescue team sent to find them.  Afterwards, everyone convened into the club for the warm chili. Competition was fierce as over 15 entrants pitted their culinary mights trying to win the coveted prize and the masses hearts.  As the tasting/gorging began taste buds were sent ablaze, noses ran and bellies became full. However, there can only be one winner on the day and once again the 1st prize went to the Twins, Charla and Catherine McNeil and their partner in crime Jessica Nicole Brown. Congrats to all three although bringing the whole McNeil clan to vote is  gerrymandering at its best.

News - October 15, 2012

It was a busy and rough, but positive, weekend for the club. The positives came from the fact that 3 Loyalist teams played 6 games in two provinces in 3 days. The negative is that we didn't get a win in any of them.

This first annual Eastern Canada Club Tournament took place in St. John's on the weekend. The men started the tourney on Friday with a 24-8 loss to the hometown Swilers. On Saturday they fell on the last play 15-12 to the Ottawa Irish. On Sunday they went down 22-0 to the undefeated Champion of the inaugural tournament St. Anne de Bellevue from Montreal. The tournament was a great success and should be something to look forward to for the coming years.

The Women were also on the Rock and played vs a Newfoundland combined club team and tied them 5-5 on Saturday and lost 17-5 on Sunday.  Great to see the ladies on tour.

Meanwhile on the homefront, a very shorthanded B side put on a valiant effort just to field a team with 25 senior players having made the trip to the Rock. They played 80 minutes with no subs vs Moncton and fell 73-5. Tough way to end the year but those 5 points are worth a ton of pride.

The A side will host the Provincial Final on Saturday vs the Trojans. Game time will be 2pm.

The club enjoyed a pair of big wins over the Trojans on Saturday providing some momentum heading into the playoffs.  The B side set the tone with a 43-0 victory. Hosam Mobarek led the way with 4 tries while Peter Wilde, Justin Acorn and Ryan Vokey had the other five-pointers. Callum Aldridge added four conversions. The win guaranteed a playoff spot for the B side who will face Moncton next Saturday.
In the A side game the boys prevailed 34-17. Boz Kuckavica led the way with two tries, while Matt Coffey, Rob Johns and Todd Beck added one apiece. Brent Rowney kicked three conversions and a penalty to round out the scoring. The win secures to spot and home field advantage for the provincial final on October 20th. The A side is off the St. John's, Newfoundland for the inaugural Eastern Canada Club Tournament this weekend.

Two men's teams travelled to Rothesay on Sunday for the Trojans annual Walter Ellis Memorial Tournament. 1 Senior team and 1 U-20 team made the trip with both teams playing in the men's division.  Both teams went 1-1 with the U-20 beating the Trojans U-20 and losing (closely) to the Trojans Seniors.  Our seniors lost to Moncton before beating the Trojans U-20s.  The tournament was called soon after the last game due to a severe thunderstorm. Despite the early end the day was very successful with many of the young guys stepping up seamlessly to play senior and a good chance for the seniors to meet the young guns.

The club enjoyed a great day of rugby and hospitality in Belleisle on Saturday for the Rovers 7's tournament.  The day started off wet but the rain cleared for perfect rugby conditions. 2 Loyalists men's teams were entered and 1 ladies team - in all almost 30 Loyalists made it down. It was a successful day playing as well with the Loyalists 2 team making it to the semis before falling to the host Rovers while the Loyalists 1 team got some revenge and beat those same Rovers in the final to take the tournament.  The Lady Loyalists, meanwhile, fell to Moncton in sudden death overtime to the Moncton Black Tide in the tournament final.  After the tournament the rains came back but wasn't able to dampen our spirits. Great day down by the Bay!

A big congratulations to the OHS Blues on their 3rd consecutive Provincial AAA Rugby Championships! The team, coached by Brent Rowney, Tim MacAfee and  helped by a host of recent grads, beat St. Mac's in an epic battle that was actually tied 12-12 at full time.  Austin Comeau had both OHS tries while Chris McHugh had the convert. As per NBIAA rules the game went to a kick-off and McHugh became the hero slotting his kick while the St. Mac's kicker missed his. Very entertaining and well played game.
In 7's action in Salisbury the Men's side went 1-1-2 with a victory over the SJ Irish, a tie with Moncton 2, and losses to SJ Trojans and Moncton 1.  The 7's series continues in Saint John this Saturday.

The club had a great time at the Fredericton Raceway last night for Loyalist Night at the Races. Sue Macdonald proved to be the most savvy bettor while her hubby Rick edged Brandon Courtney in the Bouncy Pony Race by a nose (or maybe a face, which he then planted).  Big thanks to all that came out and especially to Todd Canavan and the Raceway for the hospitality.
The club is back in action on the field this weekend with the second 7's tournament of the spring taking place in Salisbury on Saturday. Results to follow.

Out west, the Rock finished their western tour 4-0 with Boz Kukavica scoring the winning try in a 23-17 win over James Bay. That capped off a good week for both Boz and Andy Nyenhuis who each took man of the match honours earlier in the week.

In Super 15 rugby, our man Jebb proved himself more than capable of playing at that level, making an impact in both attack and defense while going the full 80 in a 19-13 Stormers win over the Waratahs.

Finally, in the desert, Chris Aaen completed the 250km Racing the Planet Jordan 2012 endurance race with a 5k stroll into Petra after a 19 hour, 90km test the day before. Well done Chris!

Canadian to play for Stormers

Canada No 8 Jebb Sinclair has been included on the DHL Stormers bench for Saturday’s Vodacom Super Rugby clash against the Toyota Cheetahs at Newlands.

The London Irish loose-forward has been released to the Stormers on loan. He arrived in Cape Town on an overnight flight from London and went straight to training at the Western Province High Performance Institute on Wednesday.

“As you know we needed players because of the injuries to the loose-forwards,” said coach Allister Coetzee in explaining the move.

“As you know we wanted Francois Louw, but the deal never came off. We also wanted Jebb as we do need a specialist No 8. Our only fit genuine No 8 at the moment is Nizaam Carr, who is a player with great potential and promise. But after that we have Nick Fenton-Wells playing No 8 for the WP Vodacom Cup side, and he is an openside flank.

“Jebb played all the games for Canada in last year’s World Cup. So he has played at a high level before, and that was crucial in opting for Jebb. We have lost a lot of experience in the form of Duane Vermeulen now that he is out injured and we needed someone who has experience of top level rugby.”

Sinclair has been in good form in England for London Irish and will offer the extra lineout option that the Stormers lost with the injury to Vermeulen.

“I don’t think he will have too much trouble slotting in. We have done it before (selecting guys in from outside at short notice), and you will recall Matt Toomua played for us on loan from the Brumbies a few years ago and we also had Schalk Brits play for us at short notice in last year’s Super Rugby quarterfinal.”

Coetzee said that Sinclair would go back to play for Canada during the June break for the international tour window and return to the Stormers at the resumption of Super Rugby in July.

“The only thing he cannot do is play in the playoffs, but that is okay as by then we should have Schalk Burger, Duane and Nick Koster coming back from injury,” said Coetzee.

DHL Stormers: 15. Joe Pietersen, 14. Gio Aplon, 13. Juan de Jongh, 12. Jean de Villiers (capt), 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Peter Grant, 9. Dewaldt Duvenage, 8. Nizaam Carr, 7. Rynhardt Elstadt, 6. Siya Kolisi, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Eben Etzebeth, 3. Brok Harris, 2. Deon Fourie, 1. Steven Kitshoff

Replacements: 16. Tiaan Liebenberg, 17. Frans Malherbe, 18. De Kock Steenkamp, 19. Jebb Sinclair, 20. Louis Schreuder, 21. Burton Francis, 22. Gerhard van den Heever

The B side completed an undefeated regular season with an exciting 35-26 comeback victory over the Woodstock Wildmen at the club on Saturday.  The upstart Wildmen led 12-8 at the half off of tries from Ben Dickinson and Bob Acheson and a George Boone convert.  James Mitchell had the Loyalist first half try while Aaron Carr added a penalty.  The Wildmen extended their lead to 19-8 early in the second half with a try from Jordan Lloyd before the Loyalists stormed back with 4 straight tries starting with a long finish from rookie James Mitchell, followed by scores for Aaron Carr, Chris Good, and Ryan Jackman.  Carr converted 2 of 4 in the second half and added a penalty to round out the Loyalist scoring. Woodstock was game to the end and finished with another try for Dickinson to secure their 4 try bonus point.  Man of the Match honours went to two try scorers Mitchell for the Loyalists and Dickinson for the Wildmen.

The Men's A side retained the Bill Thorpe Memorial Trophy last night in an entertaining 64-10 win over the UNB A side.  The students were game all night but were bested by a strong Loyalist pack giving them little opportunity to use their youthful pace.  This game should serve both sides well as they head into the playoffs.  There was also very little swearing so Bill would have been very happy with the spectacle of some good clean rugby.

Scorers for the Loyalists were Man of the Match Chris Hunter and Andy Nyenhuis with 2 tries apiece while Farmer Hayward, Rob Johns, Joel Anderson, Boz Kukavica, Blake Edwards and Chris Aaen added singles.  Brent Rowney added 7 converts.

Great to see Matty Thorpe in the squad and giving out Man of the Match mugs to Hunter and UNB's Colin Alexander. Great crowd at the club post match with a special mention to Jebby freshly back from NZ.  Bill would have been very proud.

As most of you know, Jebb and team Canada beat Tonga on Wednesday morning 25-20 coming back from a 13-20 2nd half deficit.  Jebb opened the scoring with a try 13 minutes in and the 20 or so people who shuffled, blurry-eyed, to the club at 2am woke up, and went nuts. Great defense and hard running won the match.

France is next on Sunday morning at 5:30 - the club will again be open.

Also, wanted to say thanks to all the folks that helped out with the Minis on Saturday.  Turnout of over 30 kids on the first day - great stuff and great photos Nancy!

In Saturday action at the club, the Lady Loyalists were bested by the Black Tide from Moncton by a 49-12 scoreline.  For the Gleaner's recap click here.

The U-20s were two time winners on Saturday; firstly as a result of the Irish only having 12 players, they were awarded a 20-0 bonus point default win.  They gave up a few subs and then won the exhibition game that was played by a 61-5 scoreline, despite Blake and Mowgli joining the Irish.  They will host either the Final on Saturday August 13th at 1pm.

Meanwhile in Toronto, our boy Jebb had a big day for Canada scoring his first international try (twice!) in a 28-22 win over the US.  The clubhouse was packed for the event - proper thing!  Jebb's beard was held scoreless.

Nice touch from Bruce with his personal view of the club from his longtime spot as a sideline reporter.  Thanks to our friends at the Gleaner.

The good news keeps on coming for Jebb Sinclair.  It was announced this morning on Rugby Canada's website that Jebby has been signed to a 1-year contract by the London Irish of the Aviva Premiership.  He will join the club after his duties are over at the World Cup.  The full story can be found here - http://www.london-irish.com/news/Irish61926.ink

Congrats Jebb, well deserved.  Methinks we should start planning a tour.

 Women's Result - July 25th, 2011

The Lady Loyalists were 17- 10 winners over the Saint John Trojans tonight in a game played at Loyalist Field. The Trojans were the first on the board with an unconverted try by Katie Gallant, But the Loyalists responded with two tries, one each from Marissa Walcott and Kailey Neill, both also unconverted. The Trojans pulled even with the Loyalists after some hard work inside the Loyalist 22 metre line, which allowed Kady Doyle to bring the score to an even 10 all. This try was also unconverted.

The Loyalists continued to pressure, and were finally rewarded when a heads up penalty play by Shannon Haines resulted in a try by Amanda McCoy, which was converted by Lindsay Brandon, making the final score 17-10 for the Loyalists.
